CASE STUDY
MIRAH
Chatbot based app that uses AI Skin Analysis technology for it’s users that allows them to obtain detailed skin analysis and receive personalized product recommendations in real time.
MY ROLE
UI/UX Designer
Primarily focused on developing new product concepts, storyboards, wireframes, detailed user experience and screen flows to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas and solutions.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Users in India were hesitant to purchase makeup and skincare online without talking to an in-store consultant about their skin type, skin tone and problem areas.
RESEARCH FINDINGS (Qualitative and Quantitive)
68.2% of the users used the app only to enhance their photographs without having an intention to buy products
78.9% wanted to have an in-store experience of buying as they were concerned that they will pick up the wrong product
Users want to have someone analyse and look at their skin to give them the right recommendation and affirmation before a purchasing a product
If there were to be an online experience, it must resemble to that of an offline experience

THE GOAL AND SOLUTION
Build an app that analyses skin type, skin condition, skin tone and other aspects of skins with the help of AI that will give a similar experience to that of an in-store consultation thus giving the confidence and accuracy to purchase the products online.
ADDED VALUE
Introducing allergen-information for each skincare, makeup product
Chat-bot functionality throughout the app to give a personalised experience
Look-book to enhance and widen the way the user can use a specific product
All in one beauty diary to maintain one’s skin health: An AI Simulation to visualize progress
CHALLENGES AND RISKS
Analysis of the skin
Machine learning for different face structures can be time consuming
Accuracy of the skin condition and tone
External factors like good lighting, angle and location can hamper the result and analysis
User may not have the best quality phones
SOLUTIONS
Further develop a technology by combining random photos and medical grade images to build AI deep learning algorithms
Invest in a AI deep learning tool for a makeup and skin like Perfect
Educating the user about how and where to click the photo
Per pixel raw data will be generated for custom recommendations to the user
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
Provide guidance, when needed
The user will be interacting with a new product and a new concept which means there is a learning curve and “getting used to” for the user.
By providing guidance and tutorials for complex tasks, the user will not feel lost while browsing the app thus creating a transparent and an informative product.
Build trust and confidence
The user should feel confident using the app. This can happen by building a product that provides value and proving the power of the product.
We should maintain full transparency about the security, safety and confidentiality of the app to empower the user.
Create an intuitive design
There will be a new thing that the user will be surprised by and might need time to get used to - Online assistant: Mirah.
To avoid the user from having more learning curves and the feeling of getting used to, the design should focus on being intutive rather that having to be learnt. The user should understand the “next” step without much explanation.

DESIGN IMPACT
Team Process and Efficiency
As a start up, there was no structure to be followed to communicate efficiently, provide feedback, and to follow deadlines.
Collaborated with leadership to create a structure through documentation, sprint cycles that lead to better culture and team relationships.
Organized team building sessions that included stress layoff sessions, design, product and engineering learning sessions.
Introduced Period Tracker
As the target audience was female, the idea was to create an app that served multi-purpose.
Introduced a period tracking diary that would benefit the user to maintain, track and learn about their symptoms, cycles and more.
Successfully convinced the stakeholder (biggest challenge) as menstruation is a taboo in India.
To be able to do that, the team and I underwent extensive research to understand the problem, customer and potential user mindset via in-person interviews at different locations considering factors like education, location, class, etc.
